Were you to take a gander over at the AFI tab you might see that I’ve almost completed my goal of watching every film on the list. All but one.
All but The African Queen.
Because The African Queen is not on DVD. At least on Blockbuster.com, and I assume everywhere else too. Which befuddles me. How can a movie be considered one of the best of all time, but not exist on DVD?
Anyway, because I don’t feel like tracking it down on VHS, I figure I’ll just write about my experience now:
It was good. I saw a lot of good movies. I ignored a lot of probably good movies. I had to restart in 2007 when they revised the list, but no bigs. It’s done (almost).
And in case any of you are wondering, after three attempts at watching 2001: A Space Odyssey, I finally took her in. And I loved it.
Short sentences.
Others I particularly enjoyed:
Annie Hall
Rear Window
Network
Tootsie
Sunset Boulevard
12 Angry Men
Goodfellas
and
Do the Right Thing
I’m certain that I also liked others, but I can’t remember. And I couldn’t bring myself to list movies I’d previously seen dozens of times in childhood or once in film class (except Sunset Boulevard which I loved enough to shout from the rooftops about it, even though I haven’t seen it in years and maybe I wouldn’t like it as much now, but probably not. Because it’s awesome).
Anticlimax.
Love,
Christine
PS – Thank you AFI for giving this old task-dog a project for the last couple years.
PPS – Don’t forget about The African Queen. I’m never going to finish.
I think I may have found The African Queen on Netflix…. If it is the same movie…
Annie Hall is one of my favorite movies.
I’m pretty sure I’ve seen the African Queen at Best Buy or something.
But now that you’re done, does this mean your TV explodes?
The African Queen is unbearbably content with itself, in my view. I fail to understand the appeal.
I’m extremely impressed — you are a Goddess among movie watchers.
Good job on finally giving 2001: A Space Odyssey your undivided attention for a couple hours. That one’s guaranteed to give me goosebumps every time.
I also agree with every one of your highlighted selections. A fine film mind you have.
if it’s not too late – your local library is almost guaranteed to have a copy of the African Queen. I actually liked it myself =)
