A great man once said “your [singles] small group made me rethink my decision to get married.”
A little excessive, but yes. Preach on, brother.
Last night was our first small group of the year, and as far as we can tell thus far, it’s turning out to be pretty much the “greatest small group in the universe” (Jamie’s and Leon’s words). It was a refreshing blend of depth and laughter and I’m sincerely thankful that I get to spend the year with these people – definitely an undeserved blessing. Amidst the really beautiful biblical conversations (which, lets be honest, do not translate well to blog), we discussed a number of other small group related things:
Small Group Mascot:
Our ice-breaker was a practical one: “What should our mascot be?” There were lots of really creative and wonderful ideas, but everyone in the group seemed to warm to Jess Schwartz’ contribution: a little guy by the name of “Boomie.”
A picture is forthcoming, but in the meantime please picture a boombox with little hands and legs. He’s silver. You got it. You’re picturing him. Boomie doesn’t say a whole lot, but some phrases in his limited verbal repertoire include:
Walk it Out
Hammer Time
Put that on your playlist.
You got served
My Team Supreme, Stay Clean
and
Don’t Mess with Boomie
Boomie’s character is still in development, but easily my favorite thing about him is his “wrap-it-up rap.” Much like the wrap-it-up music at the Oscars or that cane that pulls people off-stage in cartoons, when someone has been talking for just a little bit too long, Boomie will push play on his wrap-it-up cassette tape and do a little dance as he nudges whomever off their theoretical stage.
Small Group Music Video:
This is Jamie’s baby, but I offered to edit it “using my mac.”
Small Group T-shirts:
During our mascot discussion, Ryan brought up the idea of having small group t-shirts. We were overjoyed to hear people would actually want t-shirts as it is seems impossible that we wouldn’t have t-shirts.
You see, last week Jim found this t-shirt design on threadless.com for us:
This, quite frankly, is the greatest t-shirt I’ve ever seen in my remedial-math-loving life. I especially love that the symbol for “problems” is a lightning bolt.
Unfortunately the t-shirt is sold out, plus the colors are less than preferred, plus it says money (and not “mammon”), plus it doesn’t have a picture of Boomie on the back waving emphatically.
So, we’ll be making our own version of this shirt where all these problems are remedied.
Small Group Cake:
Bling:

Probably the second best night of my life.
Seriously. Our group is the shiz.
(and will you look at that cake? That must have been some amazing fun and thoughtful not to mention totally humble person who made a cake that rad with party favors and everything. just saying)
I am excited about this year.
and I love you.
I missed my group’s first meeting so I could help Jamie find your place. That’s how awesome your group is.
Ha! Its practically true. He even walked me to the door.
I’m surprised the group mascot isn’t an otter. I would think you tried to argue that Otters don’t have any Problems because they don’t have any Mammon. (Also, the first time I saw this, I thought it said Broomie and that your mascot was a broom).
What was the first best night of your life?
I said a broom sweep a broom
Jon,
Oddly enough, I didn’t even think of otter! It’s probably better that the otter remains my own personal (and this blog’s) mascot because Boomie is just so perfect for MMMP.
I’m not sure how to answer your other question. I originally wrote “best night of my life” but Ben suggested “second best” since it seemed like less of a blatant lie, and somehow funnier.
I’m loving the t-shirts. I’m loving that one of the “bling rings” was left at our house so I can wear it around the house in cool baggy sweatsuits and revisit my “rap people” days. Thank you Mo Mammon Mo Problems.
I wish our small group’s name was “the rap people.”
Before you described him…I thought Boomie would be a whale.
too bad we missed SG this weekend which leaves me unable to rebutt your claims of Best Small Group Ever…which really can’t be done because married people are all boring anyways, right?
Can’t wait to hear more about it tonight, I’m very excited for you!
